Making minds and bodies move since 2018, the Ohio-based Waves Colectivo takes a “no holds barred” approach to modern improvised music. Drawing from Cuban rumba, Puerto Rican plena, Brazilian samba as well as American metal, hip-hop and funk, Waves Colectivo sees musical traditions as a springboard to push and explore the future of Latin jazz music.
Led by bassist Will Strickler and pianist Ben Maloney, Waves Colectivo has performed across the country at festivals and venues including Bopstop (Cleveland, OH), Rockwood Music Hall (NYC, NY), Epicure Cafe (Washington DC), Cliff Bells (Detroit, MI), The Refectory (Columbus, OH), Creekside Jazz Festival (Gahanna, OH), Jazz and Ribs Festival (Columbus, OH), Eclipse Company Store Music Series (Athens, OH), Pub Bricco (Akron, OH), Ziggy’s (Ypsilanti, MI), Schwartz’s Point (Cincinnati, OH), The Soap Gallery (Youngstown, OH) and more.
Since fall 2020, Waves Colectivo has been performing weekly as the house band for Brothers Drake Meadery’s Jazz Wednesdays music series, featuring guest musicians including Grammy-nominated guitarist Dan Wilson, saxophonist Bobby Selvaggio, guitarist Brandon Coleman, trumpet player Tommy Lehman, vocalist Jasmine Spitzer and more.
Waves Colectivo has released three full-length studio albums of original music, “Forward Motion”, “Triptych Continuum” and a trio album titled “Happenin’stance.”
